Assistant Controller
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and technically strong Assistant Controller to join a growing, multi-line heavy equipment dealer and distributor. This position will play a key role in supporting the Controller and finance leadership team across the full accounting function, financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, and process improvement.
The ideal candidate will bring experience from either industry or public accounting, possess strong full-cycle accounting knowledge, and have a strong understanding of financial systems and ERP environments. Experience with SAP is highly valued. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who is looking to take on increasing responsibility and is open to managing a team in the future.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Controller in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations and the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
- Manage and review full-cycle accounting, including general ledger, reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, accruals, and financial reporting.
- Assist with preparation and analysis of monthly financial statements and management reporting.
- Partner with operational leaders to understand financial performance, identify trends, and provide actionable insights.
- Support the annual budgeting process and ongoing forecasting, including variance analysis and financial modeling.
- Assist with cash flow management, working capital analysis, and other financial planning activities.
- Ensure accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls are consistently followed.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, and financial controls.
- Leverage ERP and financial systems to improve efficiency, accuracy, and reporting capabilities.
- Work closely with the Controller and other members of the finance organization on special projects and process improvements.
- Develop a strong understanding of the company’s various business lines and their financial performance.
- Take on increasing leadership responsibilities with the opportunity to manage and develop accounting staff in the future.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field – required.
- Experience in industry accounting or public accounting.
- Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting and financial reporting.
- CPA strongly preferred — candidates who already have their CPA, are actively working toward it, or are open to obtaining it will be considered.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with budgeting and forecasting, including variance analysis.
- Strong ERP/accounting systems experience; experience with SAP is strongly preferred.
- Advanced Excel skills and the ability to work effectively with large sets of financial data.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with both accounting and operational teams.
- Demonstrated initiative and the desire to grow into a broader accounting leadership role.
- Willingness and ability to take on people-management responsibilities in the future.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a high-potential accounting professional who has developed a solid technical foundation and is ready for the next step in their career. They may come from a public accounting or industry background, have strong full-cycle accounting experience, and either hold a CPA or be actively pursuing one.
This person should be comfortable working in a complex, multi-line business, have strong ERP/system capabilities, and be excited about growing into a leadership position. Experience with SAP, budgeting and forecasting, and process improvement will be particularly valuable.
