CSS has partnered with a well-established high-end residential construction company on Cape Cod who is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its accounting and financial operations while serving as a key partner to ownership and project leadership.

This is a highly visible, hands-on role within a close-knit organization known for complex, custom residential projects. The Controller will oversee the full accounting function, own construction financial reporting and job costing, manage payroll, and help strengthen the systems and processes supporting the company’s continued growth.

The ideal candidate brings a strong construction accounting background, understands the financial dynamics of project-based work, and is comfortable operating at both a strategic and day-to-day level.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the company’s accounting and financial reporting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and reconciliations
  • Manage monthly, quarterly and year-end close processes
  • Prepare accurate financial statements and management reporting
  • Oversee construction job costing, WIP reporting, revenue recognition and margin analysis
  • Review project budgets, actual costs, profitability and financial variances
  • Partner closely with project and operational leaders to monitor financial performance
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting and company-wide cash flow planning
  • Monitor working capital and project-specific cash requirements
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting procedures and reporting processes
  • Evaluate current workflows and implement improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy
  • Serve as a primary financial contact for banking, insurance, tax and outside accounting relationships
  • Coordinate audits, tax filings and other external reporting requirements
  • Oversee payroll administration and related employee records
  • Support benefits administration, HR policies and employment compliance
  • Manage or mentor accounting staff and outside financial resources
  • Provide financial insight to ownership around planning, investments, projects and business decisions

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting or financial leadership experience
  • Construction industry experience required
  • Strong experience with job costing, WIP schedules and project-based financial reporting
  • Hands-on payroll experience
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, AP, AR, month-end close and financial statements
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management
  • Ability to work directly with ownership and operational leaders
  • Comfortable in a smaller, hands-on environment where the Controller remains close to the details
  • Strong organizational, analytical and communication skills

Helpful, But Not Required

  • QuickBooks
  • Buildertrend or similar construction/project management software
  • CPA
  • Experience supporting benefits administration, HR policies and employment compliance

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This role offers an uncommon combination of senior-level ownership and hands-on influence. Rather than being one layer within a large corporate finance department, the Controller will have direct visibility with ownership and play a meaningful role in how the business operates.

The company works on sophisticated custom residential projects and is looking for someone who can bring strong financial discipline while understanding the pace and complexity of construction.

For the right person, this is an opportunity to:

  • Serve as the primary accounting and finance leader for the business
  • Work directly with ownership and project leadership
  • Have meaningful input into systems, processes and company structure
  • Own construction accounting rather than just one piece of the function
  • Join an established, highly regarded builder with a strong pipeline of complex residential work
  • Become a long-term part of a close-knit organization where the Controller has real visibility and impact

Location: Onsite, Cape Cod, MA
