Financial Accountant
We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Financial Accountant to support the day-to-day financial operations of a growing organization. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate accounting records, supporting project financial management, and assisting with payroll, reporting, and administrative functions.
The Financial Accountant will work closely with the Controller, project management, and organizational leadership in a fast-paced, project-based environment. The role involves working with accounting, project management, payroll, and other business systems to maintain accurate and timely financial information.
Key Responsibilities
General Accounting
- Prepare and post journal entries, including accruals, prepaid expenses, and month-end adjustments.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts.
- Complete daily bank reconciliations for management review.
- Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities.
- Support annual audits by preparing schedules and supporting documentation.
- Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with company policies and applicable accounting standards.
Job Cost Accounting & Project Support
- Monitor and maintain accurate project cost information for labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment, and other direct costs.
- Review project cost reports and work with project managers to investigate and resolve discrepancies.
- Assist with project setup, budgets, cost codes, and related financial structures.
- Track committed costs and assist with initiatives designed to improve project financial visibility and accuracy.
Payroll & Human Resources Support
- Review and approve timesheet information following project management review.
- Review weekly payroll information for accuracy prior to processing.
- Verify labor allocations and employee time records.
- Prepare certified payroll and prevailing-wage documentation when required.
- Review and reconcile Paid Time Off (PTO) requests.
- Track employee reimbursements and benefit eligibility.
- Assist with onboarding communications related to payroll deductions and benefit withholdings.
- Maintain records related to leave requests, workers’ compensation matters, and other HR-related administrative activities.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Assist with cash flow monitoring and forecasting.
- Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
- Prepare financial reports, analyses, and supporting schedules for management.
- Assist leadership with financial analysis and reporting initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
Required
- Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- At least 2 years of accounting experience.
- Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and fundamental accounting practices.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments.
- Familiarity with AI tools and models, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or similar technologies.
Preferred
- Experience in construction, contracting, or other project-based accounting environments.
- Knowledge of job costing, Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, and percentage-of-completion accounting.
- Experience with ERP, accounting, project management, or financial management systems.
- Experience with certified payroll, prevailing-wage requirements, or related reporting.
