Hiring for an Outpatient Surgery Clinic RN in Boston, MA

Prior outpatient/ambulatory RN experience required – surgical setting strongly preferred.
EPIC EMR strongly preferred
Temporary role until at least 3/2027.
Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:30am-4pm (may consider part-time hours as well)
Pay: $65-70/hour (based on experience)
Position Summary:
The division offers surgery for all types of traumatic and non-traumatic injuries. Our surgeons manage a wide variety of cases such as: abdominal catastrophes, bleeding, bowel obstructions, hernias, and infections. After hospitalization, patients will continue to receive care in the clinic, whether that be for wound care, drain management, follow-up care or further surgical planning. The Staff Nurse will work alongside the surgeons, nurse practitioners, RN coordinator and medical assistants to provide high-quality outpatient care. The Staff Nurse position will entail both clinical and administrative responsibilities.
Responsibilities:

Maintains optimum quality assurance in all aspects of patient care.

Conduct assessment of patient needs including:
-
evaluate/interview patients arriving to clinic, review patient chart, laboratory data and radiology results, review clinic schedules to ensure a productive clinic

obtain vital signs/weight in the absence of the Medical Assistant

triage patients to appropriate care (includes direct contact and telephone encounters) and conduct telemedicine visits for post-operative patients

Wound care, including wound VAC management, wound packing, and dressing changes.

Assist with clinic procedures such as: excisions, incision and drainage of abscesses and biopsies.

Provide direct care to patients. This includes the administration of Medications, IV therapy, Blood Products and other clinical services per Nursing Clinical Guidelines and Standards. Assist surgeons and/or nurse practitioners with procedures or patient care in the absence of the Medical Assistant.

Effectively explains and educates patients and/or family members about any necessary procedures or surgeries. Teaching is based on assessment, expressed need from patient or family, and/or on the initiation of new treatment.

Documents and records all visits and procedures. Documentation must follow Nursing Clinical Guidelines and Standards for each patient encounter (includes direct contact and telephone encounters). Use EPIC electronic medical records.

Collaborate with the Patient Services Coordinator in scheduling patient admissions. Assist in scheduling of patient follow-up appointments in the absence of the Patient Services Coordinator. Collaborate with the schedulers to follow-up with patients missing clinic appointments and/or lost to follow-up.

Adheres to requirements for mandatory continuing education and certification in the field of nursing. Identifies personal learning needs and goals and develops a plan to meet them. Maintains and develops professional practice through continuing educational programs and appropriate learning experiences.

Participates in assignments, committees, meetings, projects, and other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:

BSN Degree

Active MA RN License
-
2 years of nursing experience required, surgical experience preferred
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:

Knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology. Able to develop clinical and administrative knowledge to facilitate work within the position. Able to increase clinical skill in surgical procedures and specialty areas, including office-based procedures.

Ability to assess medical history of patient, as well as patient concerns, and to determine any limitations/contraindications.

Able to interpret and explain clinical information, lab values, procedural requirements and outcomes.

Ability to recognize emergency situations and respond appropriately. Knowledge of locations of emergency equipment and procedures.

Able to read and write English, complete clinical documentation in the patient record and other forms of communication and explain clinical and surgical information in lay terms.

Knowledge of universal precautions.

Effective interpersonal and communications skills, with the ability to work effectively and compassionately with patients and family members; able to build working relationships with staff, provides and members of the hospital community.

Ability to lift over 5 lbs. Possesses knowledge of and practices proper body mechanics.

Must demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the principles of growth and development of patients of all age groups. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Based on examinations findings, the ability to recognize, identify, interpret and document normal and abnormal anatomic structures, physiology, pathology and pathophysiology.

Ability to question effectively to obtain pertinent medical information.

Knowledge of and compliance with MGH, Joint Commission, HIPAA, ACGME and other regulatory bodies’ standards.

Understanding and ability in clinical documentation in an electronic medical record, such as Epic.
