About Us
CSS is partnered with an organization that is building the premier nationwide network of residential water treatment companies through strategic, empowering partnerships. Backed by Private Equity—a leading micro-cap firm recognized for its growth-accelerating operational support—they are scaling rapidly. Currently operating across 23 states with roughly 1,000 employees, this organization is on an ambitious path to expand to over 2,500 employees.

As they scale, they maintain a culture that prioritizes people, values entrepreneurship, and treats their partner companies with deep respect. We are looking for a dynamic, detail-oriented Payroll Specialist to join their lean, high-performing corporate team in Boston.

The Role
With our rapid expansion comes exciting complexity. As our Payroll Specialist, you will manage high-volume, multi-state, bi-weekly payroll processing for 1,000+ employees across a diverse and growing footprint of partner entities. This is not just a data-entry role; we need an individual with an entrepreneurial mindset who looks at payroll through a lens of continuous improvement, automation, and optimization.

If you are a positive, bright, and collaborative professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment without getting overwhelmed, you will excel here.

Key Responsibilities

  • High-Volume Processing: Own the end-to-end execution of multi-state, multi-entity bi-weekly payroll for 1,000+ hourly and salaried employees, ensuring absolute accuracy and compliance.
  • Partner Communication: Serve as a primary, high-touch point of contact for local leaders and HR contacts across our 23+ state network. Build trusted relationships by communicating changes, troubleshooting issues, and answering payroll inquiries with clarity and a service-oriented mindset.
  • Reporting & Analytics: Generate, reconcile, and distribute comprehensive payroll and labor reports for corporate leadership and partner entities.
  • Systems & Optimization: Actively identify opportunities to streamline payroll workflows, automate manual entry, and optimize our HRIS functionality.
  • Compliance & Audits: Monitor and maintain up-to-date knowledge of multi-state tax compliance, local payroll regulations, and wage-and-hour laws across our footprint. Assist with internal and external audits.

Qualifications & Keys to Success

  • Experience: Minimum of 3 to 5 years of dedicated, high-volume payroll processing experience (minimum 800–1,000+ employees) across multiple states and distinct business entities.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
  • Systems Knowledge: Strong proficiency with major HRIS/Payroll platforms. Experience with UKG Ready is highly preferred, but exposure to other enterprise systems (i.e., ADP, Workday, Paylocity, etc.) will be considered.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are a must. You must be comfortable explaining complex payroll data to a wide variety of stakeholders, from local branch staff to corporate executives.
  • Mindset: A strong growth mindset with an interest in a fast-scaling, private equity-backed environment. You possess an “entrepreneurial spark” and are naturally wired to look for ways to make processes more efficient.

What They Offer

  • Competitive base salary
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • A collaborative, forward-thinking office environment with a flexible hybrid schedule (Tuesdays and every other Thursday onsite).
  • The unique opportunity to join a highly visible, PE-backed platform early in its lifecycle and grow your career alongside the business.
