Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Project Accountant with a background in the construction industry to join our growing team. This individual will be responsible for managing project-level accounting activities, monitoring job costs, supporting project financial reporting, and ensuring accurate financial records across multiple construction projects.

The ideal candidate will have strong construction accounting experience and hands-on proficiency with Sage and Procore, including job cost tracking, subcontractor billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and project financial reporting. This role will work closely with Project Managers, Operations, and the Accounting team to ensure projects remain financially accurate and on track.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage project accounting activities for multiple construction projects from project setup through completion.
  • Review and maintain accurate job cost records, budgets, commitments, change orders, and cost-to-complete information.
  • Utilize Sage and Procore to manage project financial data, review costs, reconcile information, and support reporting.
  • Prepare and review monthly project financial reports, job cost reports, and budget-to-actual analyses.
  • Monitor project budgets, identify cost variances, and communicate potential issues to Project Managers and senior management.
  • Process and review subcontractor invoices, vendor invoices, purchase orders, and payment applications.
  • Assist with subcontractor compliance, including lien waivers, insurance certificates, and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare and track client billings, including progress billings, AIA billing applications, and change order billings, as applicable.
  • Reconcile accounts payable, accounts receivable, subcontractor commitments, and project-related general ledger accounts.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close, including accruals, reconciliations, revenue recognition, and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting.
  • Review and maintain documentation for change orders, contract modifications, and project cost adjustments.
  • Partner with Project Managers to review project financial performance, outstanding costs, billing status, and cash flow.
  • Ensure compliance with internal accounting policies, construction contract requirements, and established financial controls.
  • Support external audits, financial reviews, and other accounting-related projects as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, with a strong preference for construction industry experience.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with Sage accounting software and Procore.
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including job costing, WIP reporting, subcontractor billing, and project financials.
  • Experience with AIA billing, progress billing, change orders, and construction contract administration preferred.
  • Knowledge of general ledger accounting, month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Strong Excel skills, including experience with spreadsheets, formulas, and financial data analysis.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with Project Managers, vendors, subcontractors, and internal accounting teams.
  • Ability to identify discrepancies, investigate issues, and recommend solutions independently.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working in a general contractor or commercial construction environment.
  • Familiarity with construction work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, percentage-of-completion accounting, and revenue recognition.
  • Experience integrating or reconciling financial information between Sage and Procore.
  • Understanding of subcontractor contracts, purchase orders, commitments, retainage, and lien waivers.
  • Ability to support process improvements and strengthen project accounting procedures.
