Driver Trainer & 19-A Compliance Coordinator
Position Summary
The Driver Trainer & 19-A Compliance Coordinator is responsible for recruiting support, CDL training, behind-the-wheel instruction, driver coaching, and ensuring compliance with all New York State Article 19-A regulations. This position plays a critical role in developing safe, qualified drivers while maintaining compliance with DOT, DOE, Beacon Mobility, and company safety standards.
Driver Training & Development
- Conduct classroom and behind-the-wheel training for CDL permit holders and new driver candidates.
- Prepare candidates for CDL road tests and endorsement testing.
- Deliver new hire orientation and safety training.
- Conduct remedial training for drivers involved in accidents, customer complaints, or safety violations.
- Perform route familiarization and road observations.
- Coach drivers on defensive driving techniques and student management.
- Monitor and support trainees throughout the licensing process.
Article 19-A Compliance
- Manage all Article 19-A driver qualification requirements.
- Track and maintain annual driver review files.
- Schedule and coordinate annual defensive driving training requirements.
- Monitor medical certificate expirations and renewals.
- Maintain abstract reviews and driver compliance records.
- Ensure timely completion of all DMV and Article 19-A documentation.
- Assist with DMV audits and regulatory inspections.
- Maintain driver qualification files in accordance with New York State regulations.
Safety & Compliance
- Monitor driver performance utilizing Lytx and other safety platforms.
- Conduct coaching sessions for drivers with elevated safety risk scores.
- Assist with accident investigations and corrective action plans.
- Perform ride-alongs and field observations.
- Monitor DVIR compliance and provide coaching to drivers regarding defects and reporting procedures.
- Support compliance initiatives related to ELDs, telematics, and fleet safety technology.
- Participate in monthly safety meetings and training programs.
Operational Support
- Assist Dispatch with driver coverage planning during critical shortages.
- Conduct route audits and operational observations.
- Support startup planning and dry-run execution.
- Partner with Recruiting to identify, assess, and onboard driver candidates.
- Assist with DOE, DOT, and company compliance initiatives.
- Generate reports related to training progress, licensing success rates, safety performance, and compliance status.
REQUIREMENTS
- Valid CDL Class B or higher with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- 3+ years school bus driving experience.
- Strong knowledge of New York State Article 19-A regulations.
- Clean driving record and acceptable abstract.
- Ability to train and coach adult learners.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and compliance tracking systems.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Certified CDL Examiner or Third-Party Tester experience.
- Driver Trainer certification.
- Experience with Lytx, Samsara, Zonar, or similar safety platforms.
- Previous transportation, safety, or supervisory experience.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
