Construction Estimator

Job Type: Full-Time
Department: Estimating / Preconstruction
Reports To: Estimating Manager / Project Manager

Position Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Construction Estimator to prepare accurate cost estimates for construction projects from initial bid documents through contract award. The Estimator will review plans and specifications, perform quantity takeoffs, obtain subcontractor and supplier pricing, and develop competitive bids while ensuring all project requirements and costs are properly accounted for.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review architectural, structural, civil, and MEP drawings, specifications, and bid documents.
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and prepare accurate estimates.
  • Develop material, labor, equipment, subcontractor, and general conditions costs.
  • Solicit and evaluate bids and proposals from subcontractors and vendors.
  • Compare subcontractor and supplier pricing and identify scope gaps or discrepancies.
  • Prepare detailed bid summaries and final proposals.
  • Identify potential project risks, exclusions, assumptions, and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, architects, engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers as needed.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project walkthroughs.
  • Maintain estimating databases, cost histories, and pricing information.
  • Assist with value engineering and budget development during the preconstruction phase.
  • Ensure estimates are completed accurately and within established deadlines.
  • Participate in bid reviews and turnover meetings with the project management team.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in construction estimating preferred.
  • Experience with commercial, residential, industrial, or civil construction, depending on company needs.
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, labor costs, and subcontractor scopes.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other estimating software.
  • Experience with programs such as Bluebeam, PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff, Sage Estimating, or similar software is a plus.
  • Construction management, engineering, or related education is preferred but not required.

Physical & Work Requirements

This position is primarily office-based but may require travel to active construction sites. Candidates must be comfortable working in an office environment and occasionally visiting construction sites where exposure to typical jobsite conditions may occur.
