Accounting Manager – Residential Property Management

Role Overview
Our client is a prominent property management organization seeking an Accounting Manager to join their regional headquarters. This is a vital player-coach position responsible for ensuring financial accuracy across a diverse portfolio while leading and developing a small team of accounting professionals.
You will act as the primary departmental point of contact for audit coordination and work directly with senior leadership to maintain high standards of fiscal integrity.

Core Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision

  • Manage and mentor a team of 5 accountants, overseeing the quality and accuracy of their financial work products.
  • Support team professional development through hands-on coaching and technical training.
  • Assess departmental capacity and collaborate with leadership on staffing and onboarding initiatives.

Portfolio Management

  • Maintain a direct portfolio of residential properties, producing full monthly financial workbooks and supporting schedules.
  • Perform complex balance sheet reconciliations and oversee the flow of adjusting journal entries (AJEs).
  • Provide clear financial communication and variance analysis to property managers and external stakeholders.

Audit & Compliance

  • Lead the year-end audit process, managing external auditor relationships and documentation timelines.
  • Ensure all portfolios are “audit-ready” through the enforcement of disciplined monthly and year-end closing procedures.
  • Oversee compliance and reporting for specialized or regulated housing programs.

Operational Excellence

  • Partner with the Controller and CFO on special projects, including portfolio transitions and internal control enhancements.
  • Assist in optimizing financial software workflows and departmental efficiency.

Candidate Profile

  • Experience: 8+ years of professional accounting experience, with a strong background in the real estate or property management sectors.
  • Management: Demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, or mentor a team.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA/CPA candidacy is preferred but not required.
  • Technical Aptitude: High proficiency in industry-standard property management software and advanced Excel.
  • Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to present financial data to diverse audiences.
