Our client, a publicly owned electric utility, responsible for delivering reliable, competitively priced, and environmentally sustainable electricity to residents and businesses, is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Accounting Assistant to support the department’s financial accounting and administrative operations.

Reporting to the Accounting Manager, this position is responsible for preparing, processing, and tracking a wide range of financial transactions, including utility and miscellaneous billing, accounts receivable, payments, expenditures, purchase orders, payroll support, job costing, inventory, and fleet-related activities. The Accounting Assistant plays a critical role in ensuring financial records are accurate, complete, timely, and in compliance with established accounting standards, policies, and regulatory requirements.

Key responsibilities include maintaining financial records and supporting documentation; entering and reconciling payments; identifying and resolving discrepancies such as missing invoices or duplicate payments; preparing journal entries; and assisting with the monthly close process. The role also supports the preparation of monthly, annual, and ad hoc financial reports, budget-to-actual analyses, operational summaries, and regulatory and Board reports. In addition, the Accounting Assistant assists with budgeting, bids, forecasts, rate analyses, and the annual financial audit by compiling documentation and responding to auditor inquiries. Daily balancing of receipts, deposits, and disbursements in coordination with customer service and billing functions is also required.

Candidates should have an associate degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience), prior accounting experience— preferably in a municipal, utility, or government setting—and proficiency with computerized accounting systems and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel. Familiarity with GAAP, GASB, and municipal financial reporting standards is highly desirable.

The Town provides excellent health and retirement benefits along with a competitive salary for its employees.

Salary range:
$62,000 – $87,000 per year depending on experience.
