Executive Director

Udall Shumway, a well-established midsize law firm in Mesa, Arizona is seeking a dynamic and experienced Executive Director to oversee firm operations and partner closely with leadership to drive strategic growth and operational excellence.

Position Overview

The Executive Director serves as the firm’s chief administrative leader, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the firm. This role works closely with the Management Committee and practice group leaders to ensure the firm operates efficiently, profitably, and in alignment with its long-term vision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Firm Operations: Oversee daily operations including HR, finance, IT, facilities, and administrative functions
  • Financial Management: Manage budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and financial reporting; monitor profitability and key performance metrics
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with firm leadership to develop and implement growth initiatives
  • Human Resources: Oversee and collaborate on recruitment, onboarding, performance management, compensation planning, and employee relations
  • Marketing & Business Development: Support marketing strategy, vendor management, and brand positioning
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements
  • Technology & Innovation: Evaluate and implement systems, including legal tech and AI tools, to improve efficiency and client service
  • Client Experience: Help drive a high-quality, consistent client experience across all practice areas 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance strongly preferred; Certified Legal Manager (CLM) designation desirable
  • 5+ years of leadership experience in a law firm or professional services environment
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting and performance analysis
  • Experience using time and billing software, Microsoft office, and document management software
  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage change, and drive operational improvements
  • Experience working with attorneys and understanding law firm economics (billing, origination, collections, profitability, etc.)
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and emotional intelligence
