Accountant General Accounting
Shoe Carnival (NASDAQ: SCVL) is seeking a detail-oriented Accountant to support general accounting operations, inventory control processes, and a variety of day-to-day accounting functions across the organization. This role reports to the Manager, Accounting Operations and plays a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting operational initiatives, and ensuring strong internal controls.
The position will collaborate closely with operations, merchandising, supply chain, and finance teams to support inventory accounting, reconciliations, and general accounting needs in a fast-paced retail environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support inventory accounting processes including reconciliations, variance analysis, and inventory control monitoring
- Investigate inventory discrepancies and partner with operations and supply chain teams to resolve issues
- Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial analysis
- Maintain general ledger accounts ensuring accuracy and compliance with company policies and GAAP
- Prepare and post standard and recurring journal entries
- Assist with accruals, prepaid expenses, and other general accounting activities
- Support internal and external audit requests by preparing schedules and documentation
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and strengthen internal controls
- Assist with financial reporting and ad-hoc projects as assigned
- Provide cross-functional accounting support based on evolving business needs
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance
- 2+ years of accounting experience, preferably in retail, inventory accounting, or multi-location environments
- Experience with general ledger accounting and account reconciliations
- Understanding of GAAP principles
- Strong Excel skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Effective communication and collaboration abilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with inventory accounting or inventory control processes
- Retail or multi-unit operations experience a plus
- Experience with ERP or accounting systems (Great Plains or similar preferred)
