JOB SUMMARY
The role is responsible for assisting with the supervision and daily operations of histology and sytology specimen handling, processing, transportation, and workflow within the pathology department. This position supports regulatory compliance, staff training, quality control, customer service, and performance improvement initiatives while coordinating activities of direct reports and ensuring high standards of patient care and service.

FUNCTIONS
Supervision and Leadership

Coordinate workflow of grossing and processing areas

Assist with oversight of activities of direct reports

Conduct annual performance evaluations and provide feedback
-
Assist with interviewing, selecting, coaching, and orienting employees
-
Assist with staffing and scheduling aligned with workload volume
Specimen Handling and Processing
-
Assist with ensuring staff are trained and compliant with regulatory guidelines for specimen handling and processing

Assist with ensuring proper patient identification and specimen labeling
-
Ensure appropriate handling of biohazardous specimens
Distribution and Transportation

Ensure accurate and efficient transportation of laboratory supplies, equipment, and specimens
-
Follow all applicable laws and regulations related to specimen processing and transportation

Ensure appropriate service recovery for patients and caregivers when necessary
Reporting and Recordkeeping
-
?Assist with ensuring processing of histology and cytology specimens is accurate and timely in order for pathologist to read and report prepared patient slides
-
Assist with monitoring and reporting department performance improvement initiatives
-
Assist with documentation of required monthly instrument maintenance and quality control
Education and Training

Coordinate training standards and schedules for direct reports

Assist with training and orientation of new employees

Participate in continuing education to maintain and expand skills

Stay current with regulatory and accreditation changes
Regulatory Compliance

Adhere to NMHS and NMMC policies, procedures, and guidelines

Comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations

Adhere to College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) standards
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
-
Bachelor's Degree in Biological Science, Chemistry, or a related field. Required
Licenses and Certifications

ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist. Histotechnogist (ASCP). Upon Hire. Preferred
Work Experience

4-6 years. progressive experience working in a histology or pathology laboratory environment. Required And

1-3 years. Hands-on experience with specimen handling, processing, and regulatory compliance, including biohazard safety. Required And

1-3 years. quality control, instrument maintenance, and documentation requirements. Required And

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of effective communication techniques and customer service principles, including AIDET and CARES standards, as they relate to interaction with staff, physicians, patients, families, and customers.

Demonstrated skill in clear, courteous, and effective verbal communication, including the ability to manage telephone inquiries in an efficient and professional manner. Skill in supporting and reinforcing customer service expectations through staff training and role modeling.

Ability to communicate accurately and professionally with diverse internal and external stakeholders. Ability to assist with training and coaching staff to consistently apply established customer service standards in daily operations.

Skill in professional verbal and written communication, effective handling of telephone and service issues, and accurate use of computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel for documentation and reporting.

Ability to lead and coach staff in the consistent application of customer service standards while effectively using electronic systems and computer tools to support daily operations, communication, and documentation.
