Instructor: Adult Basic Education for College & Career

The Adult Basic Education for College & Career (ABECC) Instructor is responsible for the development and implementation of career-contextualized basic skills instruction to prepare adult learners for success in college and career. This position may be responsible for providing career-contextualized instruction in either of two areas: 

• Adult Basic Education/Adult Secondary Education (ABE/ASE): Career-contextualized instruction in reading, writing and math to help learners prepare to earn their High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma
• English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL): Provides career-contextualized English language instruction in reading, writing, listening and speaking at all proficiency levels 

The duties and responsibilities of the Instructor position place the highest priority on providing outstanding educational opportunities for the community and promoting an effective learning environment for the students of Pima Community College.

The Instructor delivers instruction using a variety of methods and modalities, prepares instructional materials, and integrates technology to support student learning. The Instructor evaluates student progress and revises teaching approaches based on assessment data and learning outcomes. The Instructor also refers students to appropriate testing, advising, and support services, and participates in ongoing professional learning and peer collaboration to improve student outcomes.  

Instructors are expected to conduct all duties and responsibilities with integrity and in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local statutes and the College and program’s policies, procedures, and regulations. Instructors may have involvement in academic and student disciplinary matters as referenced in the Student Code of Conduct and the Academic Integrity Code.

The work schedule for this position is flexible and may include the ability to work varied schedules that may require evenings and multiple locations

Duties & Responsibilities

• Provides instruction and conducts classes within the scope of a course of study defined by the department, meeting all assigned classes with adequate preparation and professionalism and fostering a welcoming and inclusive learning environment
• Delivers career-contextualized instruction integrating workforce preparation skills, computer literacy, and civics into class lessons using a variety of methods and modalities, including in-person, virtual, and/or HyFlex formats; interacts with students in demonstrations and adjusts teaching styles to meet the needs of a diverse student population.
• Adheres to published class schedules by meeting and teaching all assigned classes and, when unable to conduct assigned class(es), works with supervisors to identify appropriate options, such as arranging a substitute or delivering instruction through an alternate modality, to ensure instructional continuity and required course credit hours
• Prepares and maintains current course syllabi, instructional materials, lesson plans, class presentations, assignments, student learning outcomes, and evaluation instruments for assigned courses or disciplines
• Provides students with course requirements, attendance policies, grading and assessment criteria, communication expectations, and office hours and availability information through the syllabus.
• Administer standardized and formative assessments: assess student needs and goals; determine student placement in program; evaluate student skills; and assess student progress for program continuation or completion
• Responds to student communications within a reasonable timeframe, not to exceed 48 hours for email, excluding weekends and holidays
• Refers students to appropriate College resources, including counseling, advising, and supportive services, to support student success
• Maintains academic and student records as required by the College, external accrediting bodies, and/or funders
• Ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local statutes and College and program policies, procedures, regulations, and official requirements in the performance of assigned duties
• Collaborates in the development, review, and revision of curriculum, including participation in the Student Learning Outcomes process and related operational procedures within the program or discipline, as appropriate to assignment
• May serve on hiring committees to support the selection of new instructors, as assigned
• Participates in program review and related evaluation or self-evaluation activities, as appropriate to assignment
• Completes required training offered by the College, including online and/or face-to-face training, and completes all mandated annual training required by state, county, or federal agencies
• Attends instructor meetings and other College, campus, department, discipline/program, or committee meetings, and assists with appropriate extra- and co-curricular activities, as requested or assigned
• Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor
