Job Description

The Assistant Professor in the School Counseling program at Whitworth University is a key faculty position dedicated to preparing students for impactful careers in school counseling. This role involves teaching engaging courses, mentoring students, contributing to curriculum development, and supporting program accreditation efforts. As an Assistant Professor in the School Counseling program at Whitworth University, you’ll play a key role in teaching 21 credits, creating engaging lessons, and helping students succeed. This includes preparing syllabi, delivering interactive lectures, designing assessments, and grading—all while using the university’s learning management system and other tech tools to keep things running smoothly. You’ll also advise students, hold weekly office hours, and help place students in meaningful fieldwork opportunities.


Collaboration is important in this role. You’ll work closely with colleagues to develop and improve the curriculum, meet accreditation standards, and contribute to program excellence. You’ll also participate in departmental meetings, faculty gatherings, and university-wide assessment and evaluation activities.


Beyond teaching, we’re looking for someone who actively engages in professional development, reflects on their teaching methods to improve student outcomes, and contributes to the school counseling profession through research and service. You’ll help with accreditation efforts, complete mandatory training, and communicate thoughtfully and professionally with students, colleagues, and staff.

Other duties may come up, including those assigned by the Director of the School Counseling Program, but everything you do will help us create an excellent experience for our students.



  • Earned terminal degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) from an accredited institution in counselor education. Preference given to a CACREP approved program.
  • ABD will be considered if degree is conferred by January 2, 2026. 
  • A demonstrated record of teaching, academic research, and service.
  • A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning.
  • Demonstrated growth in cultural competence, awareness of societal and structural inequities, and proven experience in effectively establishing relationships and positive communications with students and other constituents across multiple dimensions of diversity including, but not limited to, race, gender, varying abilities, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, class or religious perspectives.
  • A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth University as a comprehensive Christian liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church.
  • Demonstrates the ability to design and deliver engaging, student-centered courses while utilizing technology and reflective teaching practices to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Works effectively with colleagues to develop curriculum, ensure accreditation compliance, and maintain program quality through shared goals and continuous improvement.
  • Actively participates in scholarly research, professional development, and service activities that support the university’s mission and contribute to the field of school counseling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum five (5) years of K-12 school counselor experience.
  • Eligibility to achieve school counseling certification in the State of Washington
  • Experience securing research grants and/or grant-seeking activities.
  • Experience with data-driven decision-making.
  • Evidence of leadership in school counseling.
  • Demonstrated currency in the school counseling-related professional literature.
  • Active membership(s) in professional school counseling organization(s).



Salary Information

Assistant Professor, School Counseling 

Term: 9 months

Hiring range: $59,572 to $63,718

Commensurate with years of credited service. 1.75% increase to the minimum salary is granted for each year of credited service at the rank of assistant professor.
